SpryStep® Agilik™ KAFO
Freedom to move. Regained independence.

SpryStep® Agilik™ KAFO
The smart, custom-made orthosis that supports your knee, ankle, and foot with every step.
Due to its microprocessor-controlled smart system, the SpryStep® Agilik™ KAFO orthosis is a non-invasive mobility solution that detects your movements in real time and assists with knee flexion and extension to improve your gait performance. This allows users to walk more naturally and improve posture without limiting movements.
With its dedicated app, progress can be tracked and data shared with healthcare professionals for personalized monitoring based on real data.
This exclusive technology was developed as part of a cooperative research and development agreement with the National Institutes of Health (NIH, Bethesda, USA).
Thuasne and Bionic Power have combined their expertise to push the boundaries of mobile assistance. The integration of Agilik into the SpryStep range goes far beyond simple commercialization, it represents a shared ambition to deliver innovative, next-generation orthotic solutions for patients.
This development phase focuses on merging Agilik’s active knee support with the proven carbon composite technology of the SpryStep range. The result is a new generation of orthopedic solutions designed to enhance stability, improve gait efficiency, and offer patients greater mobility, confidence, and independence in their everyday lives.

Step-by-step process for obtaining a micro-processor-controlled powered KAFO
Each patient is unique and progresses at their own pace. The first step is to schedule an appointment with certified healthcare professionals. They will assess whether you are a good candidate for a microprocessor-controlled powered KAFO. This appointment may be conducted remotely. To prepare, you should gather:
- your medical history
- all the examination reports related to your pathology
- a picture of the shoe that you would ideally wear with the device
- 2 videos of you walking (one from the front and one from the side)
If you are deemed a good candidate for a microprocessor-controlled powered KAFO, your healthcare professional will recommend an in-person appointment to trial a testing device. The device is universal and adjustable to accommodate different body shapes and heights, giving you an initial experience of walking with the SpryStep Agilik KAFO. For this appointment, please bring your current device with you, if you have one.
After the trial, if a positive outcome is observed, you will be able to discuss funding options with your healthcare professional. Funding and reimbursement rules vary by country. Your healthcare professional will explain the local reimbursement options and, if applicable, guide you through discussions with your private insurance provider.
Once you and your healthcare professional are in agreement, is to fabricate a custom KAFO based on a cast of your leg. The casting process typically takes around 30 minutes. You will receive full instructions in advance of the appointment so you know what to expect.
Once you receive your final, custom KAFO, you will begin learning how to use the SpryStep® Agilik™ KAFO. Your healthcare professional will support you throughout each step and make any necessary adjustments along the way. You will start by wearing it for short periods and gradually increase wear over time. Your healthcare professional will also schedule regular follow-ups to monitor your progress and make any minor adjustments needed.

The SpryStep® Agilik™ KAFO is suitable for adults and children aged 5 and older.
It is designed for individuals who experience leg weakness that affects walking. It may be ideal for people with conditions such as cerebral palsy (crouch gait), muscular dystrophy, spina bifida, incomplete spinal cord injury, or hemiparesis following a stroke, among others.
The SpryStep® Agilik™ can be used in children aged 5 into adulthood, as long as the patient is able to understand and follow simple instructions and can walk at least three meters, with or without walking aids.
The final decision on suitability is always made by the therapist or clinician, and is determined by an individual assessment of each patient’s physical and cognitive abilities.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long will it take to get the product?
Every patient is unique and progresses at their own pace, making it difficult to provide a precise timeline. Our role is to tailor treatment to your individual needs and provide dedicated support at every stage of your journey.
The first step is an assessment by one of our certified Healthcare Professionals to determine whether you are a suitable candidate for a motorized KAFO. This assessment is conducted using a testing device, which accommodates a range of anatomies. While it is not as refined as your final orthosis, it offers an initial experience of walking with the SpryStep® Agilik™ KAFO. If both you and your Healthcare Professional agree to proceed, a custom KAFO (Knee Ankle Foot Orthosis) is fabricated from a cast of your leg.
A structured training program will then guide you through learning to use the SpryStep® Agilik™ KAFO. Throughout this process, Thuasne® will provide ongoing support and make all necessary adjustments to ensure a successful outcome.
Are there physical requirements to be able to use the SpryStep® Agilik™ KAFO?
The SpryStep® Agilik™ KAFO is available for patients aged 5 and older, with a body weight between 20 kg / 44 lbs and 135 kg / 300 lbs.
The device is indicated for patients with lower extremity weakness resulting in gait pathology, including, but not limited to, crouch gait associated with cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, spina bifida, incomplete spinal cord injury, or post-stroke hemiparesis.
Eligibility will be assessed by your Healthcare Professional.
Can I wear the orthosis over pants?
Yes. Check that your pants fit closely to avoid wrinkles, which can lead to skin irritation or pressure sores.
Can I drive a vehicle while wearing the SpryStep® Agilik™ KAFO?
Operating a vehicle while the device is connected to the battery is not permitted. The ability to drive with the device must be evaluated by a Healthcare Professional and in accordance with local regulations.
Do I have to wear special footwear or always use the same shoes?
The orthotist calibrates the SpryStep® Agilik™ KAFO for a specific heel height, which should be maintained consistently. A comfortable, wide-fitting shoe with a stiff posterior heel cup and lace or self-fastening closure is recommended. Trainers or athletic shoes are particularly well-suited for use with the SpryStep® Agilik™ KAFO.
Is the SpryStep® Agilik™ KAFO waterproof?
The SpryStep® Agilik™ KAFO is water resistant, but not waterproof. Meaning, you cannot shower, bathe, or swim wearing the orthosis, but will be okay if you get caught in the rain.
How can I switch from one mode to another?
The user app on your mobile phone is required to switch between modes, for example, from walking to stair descent. A rehabilitation configuration can also be programmed within the app and activated during physiotherapy sessions as needed.
How much does it cost to be equipped with a SpryStep® Agilik™ KAFO?
Funding and reimbursement policies vary by country. Your Healthcare Professional will advise you on applicable local reimbursement options or assist you in navigating discussions with your private insurance provider.
